Camp Title: GenCyber Student Camp at Michigan Tech in the Age of AI

Michigan Technological University plans to host a one-week, beginner-level, face-to-face GenCyber summer camp for fifty middle/high school students (entering grades 8 - 12) during the summer of 2022, with various pre-camp and post-camp activities during the school year. The theme of the camp is Cybersecurity + Artificial Intelligence (Cyber + AI), as AI is redefining every aspect of cybersecurity. The camp covers various fundamental knowledge in cybersecurity and AI, including ethics, phishing, python coding, AI intro, machine learning, applying AI to cybersecurity, and building robust and trustworthy AI. Camp activities include hands-on exercises, interactive lectures, discussions, games, career exploration, and campus tours.
The camp is offered at no cost to all participants. Camp participants can choose between the option of live-in (20 seats, mainly intended for non-local participants) or the option of commute (30 seats, mainly intended for local participants). For live-in participants, room and board is included. The room is standard Michigan Tech student dorm in Wadsworth Hall, managed and monitored by the Summer Youth Program (SYP) at Michigan Tech. For live-in campers, three meals are included per day. For commuter campers, breakfast and lunch are included each day. Camp participants from downstate may also be able to take the bus services provided by SYP (the cost of SYP charter bus is covered by the GenCyber program). Click here to view SYP travel information.
Check-in is held on Sunday prior to the program. Camp daytime activities will run from 8:30 am to 5:00 pm, Monday through Friday. Live-in participants will be able to join the SYP evening activities.
The camp also includes 8 hours of pre-camp activities and 8 hours of post-camp activities. All these activities will be hosted virtually during evenings or weekends (Date & Time TBD). Camp candidates are expected to participate in these activities as well.
Pre-Camp activities (8 hours) include:
1) GenCyber Kickstart Workshop: virtual, one hour
2) Introduction to Computing Systems: virtual, one hour
3) Introduction to Network and the Internet: virtual, one hour
4) Introduction to Programming and Algorithms: virtual, one hour
5) Introduction to Data and Analysis: virtual, one hour
6) Introduction to Impacts of Computing: virtual, one hour
7) Introduction to Cybersecurity: virtual, one hour
8) Introduction to AI: virtual, one hour
Post-Camp activities (8 hours) include:
1) Cybersecurity Awareness Month: one hour
2) Guest speaker on emerging AI+Cyber threats: one hour
3) Winter Wonder Hack Cybersecurity Competition: four hours
4) Student reflection and discussion: two hours
The application deadline is March 1st, 2022. Late applications may be considered but this scholarship will be awarded on a first-come, first-served basis and with consideration for the strength of the application. Due to the limited availability of seats, early registration is strongly recommended.
All camp activities are offered at no cost to all participants. Participants are responsible for their own transportation to and from campus, which may include travel expenses, parking fees, and other costs. Camp participants from downstate may be able to take the bus services provided by SYP.
The GenCyber student camp is open to all middle/high school students (entering grades 8 - 12) in the U.S., with preference given to highly motivated students. Candidates must be a U.S. Citizen.
Prior knowledge of computer and cybersecurity is not required. However, it’s helpful to have strong interest in computer and cybersecurity. Women and underrepresented minority groups in STEM are strongly encouraged to apply.

Our Sac Fry Chinook Salmon are quickly growing into the Parr phase of their life cycle. We began feeding them yesterday, as their yolk sac is almost completely absorbed into their little bodies.
